OK, so now I have grabbed your attention either because you think social media does work or because you think social media doesn’t work! We have run a series of experiments over the last 18 months and now seems as good a time to review our use of social media as any, so please read on and discover if I have simply grabbed your attention or is there some substance to my opening statement.

Online Reputation Management – Social Media Outrage
Tuesday, December 13th, 2011Uphill struggle against real and fake voices of dissent / outrage
There has been a lot of outrage in the news recently over various events whether it be Jeremy Clarkson’s rant about strikers on the ONE show or the recent outcry regarding comments on the Wright Stuff. The internet and especially Social Media has been used to highlight peoples’ outrage or otherwise. We have become a nation of armchair critics and it is affecting business. So can we protect ourselves both in our business and personal lives from attacks on our reputation.

Facebook is watching you, the new big brother 1984?
Tuesday, September 27th, 2011A number of people, who are of a certain age, or older (my age) have said that youngsters seem to live their lives in a fish bowl; they question the need for people to tweet what they are doing at any given time. Perhaps this is why marketing directors – in their forties and over – struggle to understand social media and the role it plays these days. Facebook announced their new time line that will be launched over the next couple of weeks, that will encourage users to fill in the gaps, so is this a step to far and are the older generation right to be sceptically (phew, managed to pull that one together)!

The dangers of living in the cloud, some advice.
Thursday, July 28th, 2011A couple of months ago we were having a discussion in the office about the ability for people to work totally in the cloud. When I say “the cloud” I don’t mean the fluffy white things in the sky but the ability for us to use servers hosted on the internet to store our emails, photos, documents and diaries etc., elsewhere. Whilst using cloud services can be very beneficial, there are a number of dangers as people have discovered recently, when using the services Google offer. (more…)

How to make £25million on the web by aiming for the gaps
Tuesday, June 21st, 2011An unemployed programmer Iain Dodsworth recently sold his social media engagement tool TweetDeck to Twitter for £25 million. In a recent interview on Radio 5 he said that he initially created TweetDeck for himself; so how did this tool come to be worth so much and how could you get lucky like him? (more…)

A Valentines gift from Stumbleupon
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011One would normally expect a bunch of flowers or chocolates on what is billed as the most romantic day of the year (although my wife says everyday should be romantic)! This year we at Ayrmer Software had an unexpected gift from an unusual sender -Stumbleupon. (more…)

Unscrabbling social media is child’s play
Tuesday, November 30th, 2010If social media baffles you, it shouldn’t do! It’s just another channel for you to reach your target audience. In some-ways, it’s even easier to reach your audience as they have already defined themselves as receptive to your message (as long as you don’t treat social media as a gigantic sales board). Social media really is child’s play, after all you don’t need someone to tell you how to communicate in the pub on a Friday evening, do you?

How to get the most out of Linkedin – get engaged
Friday, November 26th, 2010LinkedIn was recently described as the “masons for business people” by the Daily Telegraph (in their top 50 business websites). So if you are in business you need to know how to leverage LinkedIn and other social media websites. I was at a networking event last week and was chatting to a business manager for one of the big four banks and it soon became apparent that although he had created a profile on LinkedIn, he had done little else. You need to engage with social media tools in order to derive any benefits.

Communicating online – the do’s and dont’s
Friday, October 15th, 2010I never know whether people know about online etiquette or simply ignore it, but it is amazing how quickly communications can break down when people hide behind various forms of electronic communications like bulletin and message boards, email and text messages. The golden rule is to always pick up the phone and have a face to face discussion the moment you think that the recipient has misunderstood your message, but how often have you let things get out of hand?

Social media – how it all fits together
Wednesday, October 13th, 2010Following on from our last article about social media – social media is just one more tool for your online marketing – I thought the following summary of how it all fits together was worth posting, having spoken to a couple of clients. I was explaining to someone how using Twitter and other social media websites could help promote their site, as in the past they have only focused on their Google ranking. During our discussion I said that I use a set of rules that I apply when publishing content, be it on our web site, blog, Twitter or Linkedin. These rules are based on my perception of permission granted to me by the person who is viewing the content and can help you provide a more rounded experience of the business.
