Cyber security

Commercial cyber security is an essential element of business today. Do not take our word for it, Nominet - the organization that managers .co.uk domains within the United Kingdom - have published a review that shows 4 in 10 of businesses have experienced a cyber breach or attack. When I first founded Ayrmer Software nearly seventeen years ago - in 2002 - it wasn't on most business owners radar. In fact, when asked about cyber security, I used to tell small businesses that they were unlikely to be attacked.

How times have changed ...

Back in 2002 hackers and cyber criminals did it the hard way - manually - where as today they unleash artificially intelligent bots on the internet that learn as they crawl through mountains of your data. Organised crime is now behind cyber crime, as the ill gotten gains are huge! You can no longer be anonymous as a small business, as everyone is a target. Ironically GDPR - the EU data regulations that came into force in May 2018 have put a price on every data breach; regulators have the power to impose fines up to 4% of your turnover, so cyber criminals breach your data, now ask for 3%.

It doesn't matter if you are a small wrap around childcare provider operating on a shoe string or a primary school with restrictive budgets, you are a target and you need to take data protection and cyber security seriously.

Cyber Essentials Plus and IASME

That is why we have undertaken Cyber Essentials Plus and IASME, which are based on international best practice, risk-based and includes aspects such as physical security, staff awareness, and data backup. The IASME standard was recently recognised as the best cyber security standard for Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SME) companies by the UK Government when in consultation with trade associations and industry groups. The IASME governance self assessment includes the Cyber Essentials assessment within it as well as an assessment against 1the requirements of the GDPR. The audited IASME certification is seen as a realistic alternative to ISO27001 by an increasing number of companies.
